Rivista di Archeologia (RdA), founded in 1970, is an international widely distributed peer-reviewed archaeological journal. RdA reaches more than 30 countries and approximately 300 universities, learned societies, departments of antiquities, and museums. Areas of interest include the art and archaeology of Mediterranean world and the ancient Europe, including the Near East, from prehistoric to Late Antique times. Rda is published yearly in September, in print and electronic formats subscription and non-subscription access options. The Journal evaluates manuscripts through a double-blind peer review process. Every issue includes new scholarly work as well as a book reviews section, which provides a critical overview of new publications by emerging and established scholars.

The current Editor-in-Chief is Sauro Gelichi.

Rivista di Archeologia is a Journal owned by the Giorgio Bretschneider Editore srl. To publish an article and make it available, we need publishing rights from you for that work. Authors transfer copyright to the publisher as part of a Journal publishing agreement, but have the right to:

Peer review

La selezione dei contributi da pubblicare avviene tramite il sistema della Peer-Review: i contributi pervenuti vengono sottoposti in forma anonima a valutazione di due esperti reclutati per l’occasione, a seconda del tema trattato nell’articolo. L’identità dei revisori è resa nota con cadenza biennale tramite pubblicazione nel sito della rivista senza esplicitare i contributi per cui è stato effettuato il referaggio.
La documentazione relativa ai referaggi viene custodita, sotto forma di schede, negli archivi della Casa Editrice.

Instructions for Authors

Manuscript Submission
Authors are asked to submit manuscripts sending one hard copy of your manuscript and a CD containing all relevant electronic files to the editorial office (address below). Detailed instructions are available below. Initial submissions may be sent via mail in either Word or PDF format. Please note that if your manuscript contains special characters, PDF is desirable as it will ensure that these special characters appear correctly. Upon acceptance, a final version in Word will be required for copyediting and production.
Manuscripts submitted to the RdA are reviewed by appropriate experts without exception. While RdA Advisory Board members often serve as reviewers, manuscripts are also screened by outside experts. Most submissions are read by two scholars in addition to the Editor-in-Chief. In most cases, the time from submission to decision for articles submitted to RdA is from 4 to 6 months.
Submissions should not exceed 20,000 words, including abstract, article body, works cited, notes, and figure captions.

Statement of Policy
The Editors are interested in original research manuscripts pertaining to the the art and archaeology of ancient Mediterranean world, including the Near East, from prehistoric to Late Antique times. In peer review, we consider originality of material and interpretation, clarity of thought, and interest of readers, as well as sources and style. Citations must be supplied as footnotes rather than endnotes, and citation form must follow the Guidelines (below).

Manuscript Format and Style
As of October 1, 2015, peer review for RdA will use a double-blind process. Authors are therefore asked to remove as many self-identifying features from their submitted manuscripts as possible, e.g., "by [Author Name]," obvious citations of the author's own work, etc.
Authors are responsible for securing all necessary permissions for photographs or other copyrighted illustrations in their articles. Submitted manuscripts should be in Italian, good English, French or German.

Formatting Electronic Files
Acceptable Formats for Initial Submissions
• Microsoft Word (.doc) (any recent version)
• PDF (.pdf)

If your manuscript is in Word and contains special characters, the characters may become corrupted during the conversion to a PDF document for peer review. Therefore, please review the final PDF carefully before you finish the submission process. If your characters have become corrupted, please create your own PDF of the manuscript (by scanning, if necessary) and submit that PDF, rather than the Word file, for peer review.
Word documents should be submitted as a single file. Authors should submit figures as separate files, in TIFF (.tif) or EPS (.eps), not GIF (.gif) or JPEG (.jpg), format.
Please note that if your manuscript is accepted, you will be asked to submit high-resolution hard copies of all figures for production purposes, as not all digital art files are usable.
In addition to the main manuscript file, submit your cover letter as a separate file in the same format as your main file. If you used any revision or editorial tracking tools in your word-processing program, be sure the submitted version of your manuscript does not contain tracked changes.

Revised and Final Versions of Manuscript
When submitting a revised manuscript, please include your responses to the reviewers’ comments as part of the cover letter file. When submitting a revised manuscript with figures, include all figures, even if they have not changed since the previous version.
The final version of your manuscript must be submitted in Word (.doc) because your keystrokes will be used in copyediting and typesetting; a PDF does not contain usable character data and is thus not adequate. To ensure that special characters are typeset correctly, it is helpful if you also submit your own PDF of the final version manuscript, in addition to the Word file.

Rivista di Archeologia è una rivista scientifica peer reviewed che segue il codice etico elaborato da COPE: Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors. La Direzione e la Redazione assumono le iniziative necessarie contro eventuali comportamenti fraudolenti che si possano verificare nel processo di edizione, nella Rivista e nei suoi Supplementi: autori, referees, direttore, comitato scientifico e redattori devono conoscere e condividere i seguenti requisiti etici.

Doveri del Direttore, del Comitato Scientifico e dei Membri della Redazione

• La Redazione valuta gli articoli e i volumi proposti per la pubblicazione in base al loro contenuto, senza discriminazioni di razza, genere, orientamento sessuale, religione, origine etnica, cittadinanza, orientamento politico degli autori;
• sentito il parere dei membri del Comitato Scientifico e considerati i commenti dei referees, il Direttore decide sulla pubblicazione degli articoli e dei volumi ricevuti;
• il Direttore e la Redazione si impegnano a non rivelare ad altri – oltre all’autore, ai referees e all’editore – informazioni sui testi proposti;
• il Direttore e la Redazione si impegnano a non utilizzare nelle proprie ricerche, senza esplicito consenso dell’autore, i contenuti dei contributi proposti per la pubblicazione.

• attraverso una rigorosa procedura di double-blind peer review, i referees coadiuvano la Redazione nella valutazione dei testi proposti e possono suggerire all’autore modifiche per migliorare il lavoro;
• i referees comunicano tempestivamente alla Redazione l’eventuale impossibilità di eseguire la lettura nei tempi e nelle modalità richiesti; inoltre, sono tenuti a non accettare in lettura articoli per i quali sussiste un conflitto di interessi dovuto a precedenti rapporti di collaborazione o di concorrenza con l’autore e/o con la sua istituzione di appartenenza;
• i referees si impegnano a considerare riservato ogni testo loro assegnato e a non diffonderlo né discuterlo con altre persone senza l’autorizzazione della Redazione;
• i referees eseguono la revisione in modo oggettivo, motivano i propri giudizi, propongono integrazioni e miglioramenti al testo e si astengono da commenti di natura personale sugli autori;
• i referees segnalano alla Redazione eventuali somiglianze o sovrapposizioni del testo ricevuto in lettura con altre opere a loro note;
• i referees si impegnano a considerare confidenziali le informazioni e le indicazioni ricevute durante il processo di peer review e a non usare tali informazioni per finalità personali o a vantaggio di altri;
• i referees si impegnano a non usare in ricerche proprie, senza esplicito consenso dell’autore, i contenuti di un testo ricevuto per la revisione.

• gli autori dichiarano di avere composto un lavoro originale in ogni sua parte, di avere citato tutte le fonti (bibliografiche, iconografiche, ecc.) utilizzate e si impegnano ad acquisire preventivamente le necessarie liberatorie e autorizzazioni alla pubblicazione per il materiale presentato per la stampa;
• gli autori non inviano alla rivista articoli che siano nella sostanza identici ad altri già pubblicati da loro stessi o da altri;
• gli autori si impegnano a non inviare contemporaneamente ad altra rivista lo stesso contributo inviato alla Redazione per la valutazione;
• gli autori riconoscono la paternità dell’opera a tutti coloro che abbiano dato un contributo significativo all’ideazione, organizzazione e realizzazione del testo o di sue parti; essi si impegnano, inoltre, a riconoscere esplicitamente il contributo di eventuali altre persone che abbiano partecipato in modo significativo alle diverse fasi della ricerca;
• prima dell’invio, gli autori si impegnano a controllare la correttezza delle informazioni, comprese quelle bibliografiche, contenute nell’articolo: essi, inoltre, informano tempestivamente la Redazione della rivista nel caso individuino, nel proprio lavoro, eventuali errori o inesattezze.

Copyright policies

Articles proposed and accepted for publication in the journal Rivista di Archeologia are published, in printed and electronic form, without any financial cost to the authors or to the institutions to which they belong.

Each author retains sole ownership of author’s rights and intellectual property rights over their own work. As such they may freely share their manuscript immediately after publication and without any embargo period, in Word or in any other format, in the version originally proposed and delivered for publication – in other words without our processing and pagination – in green open access on internet sites, or online archives or repositories.

Each author will contractually receive from Giorgio Bretschneider Editore an electronic offprint in the form of a free PDF of the final version, processed, revised, accepted, paginated and edited, of their publication for exclusively personal use. This PDF is covered by copyright and is the property of the publisher as it was processed, revised, edited and paginated by Giorgio Bretschneider Editore for exclusive use in its own publications, in print or electronic, and may contractually be uploaded, fully or in part, to online storage, archives or repositories. Any form of self-archiving must mention © Giorgio Bretschneider Editore and the DOI.
